Each Student is Assessed for Personalized Learning
Every student has unique learning needs and styles. To ensure students receive personalized instruction, all students interested in receiving reading instruction take the following diagnostic assessments:
- CORE Phonics Survey: This is a universal phonics screener which evaluates decoding skills. Results determine a systematic plan of action for instruction.
- DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency: This assessment was developed by the University of Oregon to evaluate accuracy and fluency rate.
- Observation of Reading Behaviors (ORB): Students will read while Jaclyn listens, noting behaviors like pronunciation, self-corrections, fluency, prosody, and errors.
Personalized Diagnostic Report
After collecting the data from the diagnostic assessments, Jaclyn creates a personalized report and learning plan for the student, outlining next steps.

Based on the results of the CORE Phonics survey, Jaclyn will determine the student’s path of instruciton using the University of Florida Literacy Institute Foundations curriculum, developed by the Lastinger Center of the University of Florida. Student progress is assessed through spelling assessments, observation of reading behaviors, and DIBELS progress monitoring assessments.

Using the results from the diagnostic assessment, Jaclyn will choose texts appropriate for your student’s reading abilities. Using these texts, Jaclyn will select specific strategies from Jennifer Serravallo’s “The Reading Strategies Book” as well as critical reading strategies applied in her higher education classrooms to instruct your student. Following a guided practice model, students will engage with the text, building content knowledge, vocabulary, and genre awareness. Strategies used are aligned with Florida B.E.S.T. standards and will help students analyze the text for deeper understanding.
Students will be assessed through a mixture of formal assessments that mimic FAST style questions, as well as formative assessments like writing assignments, accountable talk, graphic organizers, and observing when new strategies taught are used during independent reading.
Flamingo Small Group Tutoring Program
Have a group of students who need decoding skills and reading comprehension?
The Flamingo Small Group model is perfect! Great as a guided reading group or a homeschool class, students will receive specific reading coaching as they improve fluency , accuracy, and prosody. Each session is 60 minutes. Students are engaged the following steps. Groups are no larger than 5 students.
Cost: $30 per student
Step 1 Reading for Fluency
Using the CORE Phonics Survey and observation of reading behaviors, Jaclyn will assess and diagnose students reading abilities. Students will read texts at their independent level, receiving coaching while reading.
Step 2 ASsessment
Students will be assessed using DIBELS progress monitoring or an observation of reading behaviors to determine effectiveness of instruction and accuracy of text selection.
Step 3 WOrd Work
Students will engage in orthographic mapping, decoding, and encoding skills using manipulative letters and routines scripted by the Flamingo Small Group Structure as directed by the University of Florida Lastinger Center.
Step 4 Reading for meaning
Students will read a text at their instructional level, building background, vocabulary, and comprehension with strategic questioning. Students receive explicit coaching in decoding strategies.
Step 5: Connecting Reading and Writing
Students will write about the text read in the previous step.
