How to Use Elkonin Boxes

Do you have students who are struggling with spelling? Elkonin boxes can help! Watch video to learn the steps. Scaffold your student when writing sentences or words to help them master letter/sound correspondence.

Incorporating Phonemic Awareness

Is your student struggling to blend words when reading? Does your student need help with spelling? Incorporating Phonemic Awareness into your word work can help them to read and spell more effectively. Watch this video for a demonstration of an auditory blending and segmenting drill. Choose 2-3 words for the student to blend and 2-3 for the student to segment before you begin working with letters directly. Happy learning!

Blendable Sounds

Could the way you are saying the letter sounds affect your child's ability to read? As we learn more about how students learn to read, we are finding out that the way we have taught letter sounds in the past is not effective for encouraging blending among early and emerging readers. Watch this video to learn how to pronounce letter sounds in a blendable way.

Using Manipulative Letters

Looking for ways to make your phonics instruction multisensory? Using manipulative letters is a great way to engage students kinesthetically, auditorily, and visually. In this video, I will coach students through building and reading words. Prior to this lesson, I chose my focus and created a word list with initial, medial, and final phoneme changes. Want more information on how to use this strategy at home?  Enroll in our parent workshop on Manipulative Letters to learn how to make word lists and create decoding and encoding scripts.
